Discrimination

Beginning of New Orleans

This city offered amalgamated living and opportunities in the 1800s, when New Orleans was up and coming. The Free People of Color are a prime example of this and French Creoles were often of mixed race, as interracial relationships were common. NOLA was one of the first cities to allow Blacks the right to vote and seats in governmental offices.

The Line of Segregation

New Orleans was originally a city where Whites and Blacks lived next door to one another. At some point in the 1900s, segregation was built into law in Louisiana, and it spread like fire across New Orleans. People who lived with freedom for over a hundred years were now told to use separate courts, bathrooms, and service buildings, based on their race. Even those who were of mixed race could be condemned for their partial colored roots. New Orleans was a city where Black and White was not so clear. The gray that people lived in, by the lightened tone of their skin and mixed race created an easy point to argue that if you cannot even decipher someone's race, why is it important? Jim Crow Statutes imposed a line between people and removed basic rights to vote and equality of living.

Although there are parts of New Orleans with higher concentration of one race,
the lines are not so clear as they are in other cities.
